ARTIST OPEN CALL: DAISY CHAIN

Corridor seeks applications from a socially-engaged artist based in the South East of England working with moving image/lens-based media for our new project DAISY CHAIN.

This commission opportunity is for one artist to work with a group of LGBTQIA+ young people in Adur (West Sussex) aged 15-26 to co-create new artworks for exhibition and screenings in response to Věra Chytilová's groundbreaking experimental film Daisies (1966).

Artists must have a participatory practice and experience of working creatively with young people.

Project context

Marking the 60th anniversary of Věra Chytilová's groundbreaking experimental film Daisies (1966), DAISY CHAIN will commission six new artist moving image works alongside workshops, screenings and public events. This commission opportunity is one of the six.

Daisies, with its anarchic humour and rejection of convention, is a landmark of the Czech New Wave.  Developed in partnership with the National Film Museum in Prague (NaFilM), the project brings together artists, audiences and communities across borders to explore themes of visibility, gender, age, power and representation through moving image and mixed media.

Daisies is a kaleidoscope of visual and sonic experimentation, offering a rich source of conceptual, thematic and aesthetic inspiration. Reflecting the film's collage-based visual language, shaped in part through Chytilová's collaboration with artist and costume/set designer Ester Krumbachová, the commissioned artists will be invited to work across both moving image and 2D/mixed-media formats.

In Adur and Worthing, three England-based artists will work collaboratively with older women, young women and LGBTQIA+ youth to develop new artworks in response to Daisies and shaped by participants' experiences, ideas and perspectives. At the same time, three artists in Czechia will create new commissions.

The resulting works will be shared through a programme of exhibitions, screenings, workshops and talks across England and Czechia in 2027, creating opportunities for international exchange, conversation and creative participation. Working closely with Prague-based NaFilM and Brighton-based videoclub, the project will reach audiences in both countries.

DAISY CHAIN is Corridor's most ambitious project to date and builds on five years of developing socially-engaged artist-led projects rooted in collaboration, care and lived experience.

Process and practice

The three UK commissions are positioned as socially engaged. That is, each artist will work collaboratively with a group of participants to make new work. Corridor recognises there are different approaches to collaborative and co-creative practice. Peer to peer conversations exploring the complex and often messy questions of authorship and power dynamics in socially engaged work will be supported by Corridor’s co-director and experienced artist Annis Joslin, who is also one of the commissioned artists.

Given the short turnaround we anticipate artists will come with a clear starting point, but expect the methodology to create space for the participants to have input, autonomy and creative freedom.

Commission expectations

  • Devise, in consultation with Corridor, a series of creative, hands-on workshops* for LGBTQIA+ youth incorporating film, collage and mixed media.

*Estimate 8 x short sessions, but there is flexibility to accommodate 1 or 2 longer sessions if needed. Young people won’t necessarily have an arts background.

  • Create (with participants) final artworks in response to the film Daisies including: a moving image work (2-3minutes) and a series of 2D collage or mixed media artworks for public exhibition. Nb. We encourage a transparent process and ongoing dialogue around questions of authorship with the groups each artist is working with, with the aim of reaching a shared understanding of how the finished work is positioned and credited.

  • Final works will be presented through a series of screenings (UK venues) and a printed exhibition. Nb. the number of printed works will be within a modest quantity and budget, to be discussed with each artist.

  • This is a supported commission process. The appointed artist will be expected to participate in 4-6 online meetings with the other commissioned artists led by Annis Joslin - focused on collaborative practice, artistic exchange and knowledge sharing.

  • To complete exhibition ready artworks on time and to budget.

  • Please note: we have been asked that in order to create a safe space for young people, some of whom may not have disclosed their identity to parents and carers, we will not be publicly labelling any workshops as LGBTQIA+

Artist fee and budget

Artist fee: £4,200 (inclusive of VAT), plus travel paid in installments.

There is an additional budget for materials for creative production, workshops and any exhibition outputs (e.g. print)
